Dari jauh ia datang untuk berjumpa langsung dengan Nabi saw, tetapi Nabi saw tidak dapat dijumpainya.
Dalam hati Uwais Al-Qarni bergolak perasaan ingin menunggu kedatangan Nabi saw dari medan perang. Tapi kapankah Nabi pulang? Sedangkan masih terngiang di telinganya pesan ibunya yang sudah tua dan sakit-sakitan itu, agar ia cepat pulang ke Yaman.
Akhirnya, karena ketaatannya kepada ibunya, pesan ibunya mengalahkan suara hati dan kemauannya untuk menunggu dan berjumpa dengan Nabi saw. Karena hal itu tidak mungkin, Uwais Al-Qarni dengan terpaksa pamit kepada Siti Aisyah ra untuk segera pulang kembali ke Yaman, dia hanya menitipkan salamnya untuk Nabi saw. Setelah itu, Uwais Al-Qarni pun segera berangkat mengayunkan langkahnya dengan perasaan amat haru.
Setelah peperangan usai, Nabi Muhammad SAW kemudian kembali ke Madinah. Sesampainya di rumah, Nabi bertanya kepada Siti Aisyah perihal siapa yang datang mencarinya.
Nabi mengatakan bahwa Uwais Al-Qarni anak yang taat kepada ibunya, adalah penghuni langit. Mendengar perkataan Nabi saw, Siti Aisyah ra dan para sahabat tertegun. Menurut keterangan Siti Aisyah ra, memang benar ada yang mencari Nabi saw dan segera pulang kembali ke Yaman, karena ibunya sudah tua dan sakit-sakitan sehingga ia tidak dapat meninggalkan ibunya terlalu lama. Nabi Muhammad saw melanjutkan keterangannya tentang Uwais Al-Qarni, penghuni langit itu, kepada para sahabatnya., “Kalau kalian ingin berjumpa dengan dia, perhatikanlah ia mempunyai tanda putih ditengah talapak tangannya.”
Sesudah itu Nabi saw memandang kepada Ali ra dan Umar ra seraya berkata, “suatu ketika apabila kalian bertemu dengan dia, mintalah doa dan istighfarnya, dia adalah penghuni langit, bukan orang bumi.”
Waktu terus berganti, dan Nabi saw kemudian wafat. Kekhalifahan Abu Bakar pun telah digantikan pula oleh Umar bin Khatab. Suatu ketika, khalifah Umar teringat akan sabda Nabi saw tentang Uwais Al-Qarni, penghuni langit. Beliau segera mengingatkan kembali sabda Nabi saw itu kepada sahabat Ali bin Abi Thalib ra. Sejak saat itu setiap ada kafilah yang datang dari Yaman, Khalifah Umar ra dan Ali ra selalu menanyakan tentang Uwais Al Qarni, si fakir yang tak punya apa-apa itu, yang kerjanya hanya menggembalakan domba dan unta setiap hari? Mengapa khalifah Umar ra dan sahabat Nabi, Ali ra, selalu menanyakan dia?
Rombongan kalifah dari Yaman menuju Syam silih berganti, membawa barang dagangan mereka. Suatu ketika, Uwais Al-Qarni turut bersama mereka. Rombongan kalifah itu pun tiba di kota Madinah. Melihat ada rombongan kalifah yang baru datang dari Yaman, segera khalifah Umar ra dan Ali ra mendatangi mereka dan menanyakan apakah Uwais Al-Qarni turut bersama mereka. Rombongan kafilah itu mengatakan bahwa Uwais Al-Qarni ada bersama mereka, dia sedang menjaga unta-unta mereka di perbatasan kota. Mendengar jawaban itu, khalifah Umar ra dan Ali ra segera pergi menjumpai Uwais Al-Qarni.
Sesampainya di kemah tempat Uwais berada, khalifah Umar ra dan Ali ra memberi salam. Tapi rupanya Uwais sedang shalat. Setelah mengakhiri shalatnya dengan salam, Uwais menjawab salam khalifah Umar ra dan Ali ra sambil mendekati kedua sahabat Nabi saw ini dan mengulurkan tangannya untuk bersalaman. Sewaktu berjabatan, Khalifah Umar ra dengan segera membalikkan tangan Uwais, untuk membuktikan kebenaran tanda putih yang berada di telapak tangan Uwais, seperti yang pernah dikatakan oleh Nabi saw. Memang benar! Tampaklah tanda putih di telapak tangan Uwais Al-Qarni.
Wajah Uwais Al-Qarni tampak bercahaya. Benarlah seperti sabda Nabi saw bahwa dia itu adalah penghuni langit. Khalifah Umar ra dan Ali ra menanyakan namanya, dan dijawab, “Abdullah.” Mendengar jawaban Uwais, mereka tertawa dan mengatakan, “Kami juga Abdullah, yakni hamba Allah. Tapi siapakah namamu yang sebenarnya?” Uwais kemudian berkata, “Nama saya Uwais Al-Qarni”.
Dalam pembicaraan mereka, diketahuilah bahwa ibu Uwais Al-Qarni telah meninggal dunia. Itulah sebabnya, ia baru dapat turut bersama rombongan kafilah dagang saat itu. Akhirnya, Khalifah Umar dan Ali ra memohon agar Uwais membacakan do'a dan istighfar untuk mereka. Uwais enggan dan dia berkata kepada Khalifah, “saya lah yang harus meminta do'a pada kalian.”
Mendengar perkataan Uwais, khalifah berkata, “Kami datang kesini untuk mohon doa dan istighfar dari anda.” Seperti yang dikatakan Rasulullah sebelum wafatnya. Karena desakan kedua sahabat ini, Uwais Al-Qarni akhirnya mengangkat tangan, berdoa dan membacakan istighfar. Setelah itu Khalifah Umar ra berjanji untuk menyumbangkan uang negara dari Baitul Mal kepada Uwais untuk jaminan hidupnya. Segera saja Uwais menampik dengan berkata, “Hamba mohon supaya hari ini saja hamba diketahui orang. Untuk hari-hari selanjutnya, biarlah hamba yang fakir ini tidak diketahui orang lagi.”
Fenomena Ketika Uwais Al-Qarni Wafat
Beberapa tahun kemudian, Uwais Al-Qarni meninggal dunia. Namun ada yang janggal ketika penghuni langit ini wafat. Ada begitu banyak orang yang datang tanpa diketahui asalnya. Padahal Ia bukanlah sosok terkenal.
Saat akan dimandikan, ada banyak orang yang berebutan ingin memandikannya. Demikian juga ketika akan dikafani, sudah banyak yang menunggu dan ingin mengafaninya. Hal yang sama juga terjadi ketika hendak menggali kuburannya, disana ternyata sudah ada orang-orang yang menggali kuburnya hingga selesai. Ketika usungan dibawa menuju ke pekuburan, luar biasa banyaknya orang yang berebutan untuk mengusungnya.
Kematian Uwais menggemparkan negeri Yaman. Karena Ia bukan siapa-siapa, namun begitu banyak orang yang datang saat meninggalnya dan mengurus jenazahnya. Padahal semasa hidup, Uwais Al-Qarni adalah seorang fakir yang tidak dihiraukan orang.
